Our Cattle
Cows
Our foremost aim is to provide our cows with the most stress-free environments possible. Our approach involves a thoughtful seasonal cycle for our cattle:
During the summer months, our cattle graze on a rotational pasture system. In the fall, they engage in swath and cover crop grazing. Throughout the winter months, bale grazing is our preferred method. Our purebred Hereford herd follows the same calving schedule as the commercial herd, commencing in late February and concluding in mid-April. We rely on predictable cow families and strategically utilize A.I. bulls sourced from across North America to continuously enhance our genetics. For heifers, we prioritize breeding with light birthweight sires to ensure calving ease and earlier rebreeding. Once they reach two years of age, they are thoughtfully rebred to high-performance bulls, further strengthening our breeding program.
Bulls
Every year, our bull pen expands. When the time comes to select our keeper group in the fall, we focus on identifying bull calves with the potential to enhance any herd. These bulls play a critical role by contributing half of the genetic potential to the calf crop. To make the cut, our bulls must meet specific criteria: 1. Structural Integrity: They need to be structurally correct. 2. Pedigree Strength: They should come from strong pedigrees. 3. Reproductive Fitness: Passing a reproduction evaluation is a must, ensuring they provide calving ease and fertility that directly translates into profitability.
Both the naturally and artificially selected bulls are chosen based on EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences) to enhance our herd's traits. These bulls are not just valuable; they are economically vital to our operation's success.
